South Connemara is the home of the famous ‘Galway Hooker’ traditional sailing boat. They are a source of great pride and tradition in the area and can be seen at local regattas on most weekends during the summer months. Local festivals include ‘Feile na n-Oileain’, ‘Feile Chuigeil’, ‘Feile Chaladh Thadhg’ & ‘Feile an Doilin’. This is a fantastic area for walking with popular walks marked by “Sli Chonnamara” signs dotted around the area. There are some fantastic scenic walks along ‘less beaten tracks’. The walk up “Cnoc Leitir Moir” leads to spectacular views of these gaeltacht islands and the surrounding regions of Carna, Carraroe and Cois Fharraige. One could spend the day cycling the entire islands stopping off at the many local beaches and beauty spots along the way. A local guide can be organised for guests for half or full day excursions with advance notice.

The Lettermullen and Garumna Heritage Centre hosts cultural and heritage exhibitions of the private collection of the local historian John Bhaba Jeaic Ó Confhaola. The collection includes old books in Irish and English as well as newspapers and magazines from times past ...as well as many interesting artefacts used in everyday life in the history of the island people. Situated in the heart of the Gaeltacht and South Connemara, this is an area rich in irish language culture. It is one of the few remaining areas in Ireland where the Irish language is genuinely used in everyday life. It is the first language of many and can be heard in the local shops, schools and churches. Lettermore is considered one of the strongest irish language speaking areas in the country. Hundreds of young students and older adults come to the area to learn the language each year during the summer months.
