Local Activities

Irish Language Courses
Situated in the heart of the Gaeltacht and South Connemara, this is an area rich in the irish language culture. It is one of the few remaining areas in Ireland where the Irish language is genuinely used in everyday life. It is the first language of many and can be heard in the local shops, schools and churches. Hundreds of young students and older adults come to the area to learn the language each year during the summer months. Colaiste na n-Oileain (091-595890/0872676990) is one of the local summer colleges for the younger students and “Muintearas” (091-551145) is a local organisation which puts on courses for older students. Both are situated 3 minutes from this house.

South Connemara is the home of the famous ‘Galway Hooker’ traditional sailing boat. They are a source of great pride and tradition in the area and can be seen at local regattas on most weekends during the summer months. Local festivals include ‘Feile na n-Oileain’, ‘Feile Chuigeil’, ‘Feile Chaladh Thadhg’ & ‘Feile an Doilin’
Day trips aboard one of these special craft boats can be organised weather permitting.

Walking & Cycling
This is a fantastic area for walking with popular walks marked by “Sli Chonnamara” signs around the area. There is some fantastic and beautiful scenery to be discovered along ‘less beaten tracks’. The walk up “Cnoc Leitir Moir” leads to spectacular views of these gaeltacht islands and the surrounding regions of Carna, Carraroe and Cois Fharraige. One could spend the day cycling the entire islands stopping off at the many local beaches and beauty spots along the way. A local guide can be organised for guests for half or full day excursions with advance notice

There are some great spots in the area for off shore fishing.
